The 28-Day Cycle: The Follicular Phase

Updated: Mar 15, 2023

The follicular phase refers to that part of your menstrual cycle when an egg matures in the ovaries. It's part of an ongoing process in your body during reproductive years when hormones activate changes in the body that make it possible to become pregnant.

Estrogen and testosterone levels rise, making this time optimal for muscle growth. Strength training and HIIT workouts are key in this time, and you will likely have the energy and productivity to do so.

I recommend kickboxing, indoor cycling classes, and intense weight lifting during this time. It is a great time for socializing, and trying new things!

You should try eating avocado, salmon, sesame, red meat, carrots, and complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes and lentils. These foods are great during your follicular phase because complex carbohydrates help keep blood sugar stable and root vegetables like carrots help eliminate excess hormones so we can focus on the good stuff!

We want to keep our protein intake high during all phases and keep our bodies well-nourished, but especially in this phase your hunger levels will be lower and we need to remember to take care of ourselves with food.

Your energy levels are rising, and your body is ready to perform in preparation for your next phase- the ovulation period.
