Types of Hormonal Birth Control

Implant

The implant is placed inside the arm of the patient. It is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy and does so by releasing progesterone into the bloodstream.

The Pill

The pill is taken once a day and contain a combination of progesterone and estrogen to prevent pregnancy.

IUD

The IUD is placed inside the vagina through the opening of the cervix. The 3 types of IUDs that use the hormone progestin include Mirena, Skyla, and Liletta.

Rings

The ring is a small, flexible piece of plastic that's inserted into the vagina to provide birth control. It works like the pill, but only needs to be inserted once a month.

Injections

The hormone progestin in the birth control shot works by preventing ovulation.

Skin Patches

The patch is a thin, beige piece of plastic that looks like a square bandage. It's easy to use and works like the pill, but you only need to change your patch once a week.

These are the side effects of birth control.

Spotting, headaches, chest pain, cramping, difficulty speaking, confusion, loss of vision, trouble breathing, increased blood pressure, STDs, bloating, blood clots, heart attack, stroke, liver disorders, depression, jaundice, and even death
